Mozambique: Local court overrules PGR's decision to shelve pigeon pea case - Lusa
Zambia National Service officers in Nyimba district have impounded 14 trucks laden with maize reportedly destined for export to Mozambique.
Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo says 420 metric tonnes of the grain could have been smuggled out of the country via Nyimba district.
ZANIS reports that Mr Kasolo said initially 11 trucks each carrying 600 by 50 kilogram bags of maize were impounded in the transit district.
Mr Kasolo said three more trucks were impounded for attempting to smuggle maize into Mozambique.
He stated that all trucks have been impounded and that all the drivers of the trucks and other people that were found on the trucks have been apprehended.
Mr Kasolo said that involvement of ZNS officers in fighting the smuggling of the grain will help reduce the illegal activities which are threatening food security in the country.
He also revealed that a local miller who benefited from Government subsidized maize is alleged to be smuggling the grain into Malawi.
On March 31, the Provincial administration in Eastern province intercepted over 2000 kgs of Food Reserve Agency maize that was destined to export Malawi.
