Ten dead, 13 missing and eight survivors is the current toll of the sinking yesterday morning on the Zambezi River of a passenger vessel near Luabo district, Zambézia province, O País reports.
Preliminary information provided by Chinde District Administrator Pedro Vírgula, cited by @Verdade, reports that the wooden vessel, identified as Julia I, was carrying more than 30 people and on its usual route on the Zambezi River when it sank.
“It is in constant service, as we do not have any boats and we do not have a barge. People use the boat between Chinde and Marromeu to catch a train to Beira or take another boat to Caia or Quelimane,” Virgula told Radio Mozambique.
The trip, which lasts at least 5 hours, goes ahead despite the absence of even minimum safety conditions, and has been using unriverworthy vessels ever since the ferry boat operating in the region broke down in 2015. The approximately 10 million meticais (around US$156,385 at current exchange rates) for its rehabilitation have since been lacking.
