More than a thousand classrooms were destroyed by the wind and heavy rain that has hit the country since the beginning of the present rainy season.
Ministry of Education and Human Development spokesman Manuel Simbine said that Nampula was the worst affected province, with more than four hundred classrooms destroyed, potentially affecting about twenty-one thousand students.
Simbine pointed out that, while mobilising funds from partners for the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, the sector was using alternative means to ensure the normal start of classes on Monday, 5 February.
Simbine said that the 2018 academic year would see more than 200 new schools in different parts of the country open their doors. Regarding free school textbooks, he said that the challenge was to ensure that textbooks were available in every school in the country on the first day of classes.
The official opening of the 2018 academic year takes place today, Friday, with a ceremony in Sussundega district, Manica province, led by Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário.
The Ministry of Education and Human Development spokesman stressed that opening ceremonies would take place in all schools in the country, and called on all stakeholders, including parents and guardians, to participate.
