Mozambique: Food assistance for 500 families affected by drought in four districts of northern Gaza
“I Run for Water for Everyone” / Charity 10K Run/5K Walk, Maputo, 19th March 2016
Just under half of all Mozambicans live their lives without access to fresh safe water.
The small remote community of Ziranguane, 23 km away from the town of Mecanhelas in Niassa Province, is home to 162 families. Around 200 children are studying at the local primary school, EP1 Ziranguane. There is no safe clean water facility in the school nor in the community. Children from school and their families have no choice but rely on polluted traditional ponds used for their “machambas” (agricultural plots).
Austine attends the 3rd class and like her colleagues would love to have clean water: “Before getting to school I need to fetch water daily from the pond to the house and this gets me tired. I don’t like the water in the pond because it is very dirty. If we would have water here at the school I would like it very much. I never drank clean water. Clean water is beautiful”.
WaterAid Mozambique, which has been running water, sanitation and hygiene projects in Mozambique since 1995, will be hosting a charity run/walk in Maputo to celebrate World Water Day, and to raise funds to build a new well for the children of Ziranguane school and their community.
The event will take place on Saturday, 19th March, at 7:30am, at the Praça da Independência, Maputo. There will be a 10K race, and a 5K walk/fun run. Families, corporate teams and groups are welcome.
According to Florencio Marerua, Country Representative at WaterAid Mozambique, “We are hosting this event, the first of its kind in Mozambique, to raise awareness of World Water Day and the plight of communities like Ziranguane. This is just one of many communities in which access to water is hindering development and restricting education, particularly for girls. By joining us on Saturday, 19th March, you can play your part to celebrate World Water Day and help those who are less fortunate.”
Participants should register in advance at AACM (Associação de Atletismo da Cidade de Maputo), at Parque dos Continuadores (entrance at Av. Martires da Machava), Monday-Friday between 11:00-14:00. The fee is 300 mts for the 10K race (1,200 mts for groups of 5) and 200 mts for the 5K walk (800 mts for groups of 5). All further donations to the cause are also very welcome.
There will be trophies and a range of prize vouchers for the race winners, kindly donated by the Polana Serena Hotel, Premier SuperSpar and Hotel Cardoso. All runners and walkers will receive a t-shirt, cap, water and refreshments.
The event is generously sponsored by Global Alliance (Platinum Sponsor), Agua da Namaacha (Water Sponsor), DP World (Silver Sponsor), WE Consult, WICO Consultoría e Serviços, COTUR Travel and Premier SuperSpar. Partners include Club of Mozambique, LM Radio, Radio de Moçambique, TVM (Televisão de Moçambique), AACM (Associação de Atletismo da Cidade de Maputo), Belavista Serigrafía e Serviços, CCFM (Centro Cultural Franco Moçambicano), Laboratório de Ideias, Mozup, Olhar Artístico, Output, ProGym Fitness, Supermercado Dinámica and Vodacom.
