President Filipe Nyusi yesterday pointed to the elimination of bureaucracy and corruption in Mozambique as first priorities in the development of tourism.
“Our government is working to eliminate bureaucratic and corrupt practices that inhibit the development of tourism,” the head of state said.
Filipe Nyusi was speaking during the opening of the International Conference on Nature-Based Tourism in Maputo, an event organised by the government in partnership with the Global Wildlife Programme and the World Bank.
Given the country’s potential in that regard, tourism should be considered instrumental in the fight against poverty and as a way to generate income and employment, the president said.
“Our government has identified tourism as one of the four strategic pillars of the country’s development. We want to position Mozambique as one of the world’s main tourism destinations,” he added.
“Ecotourism is becoming more and more an attraction,” the head of state said, inviting investors to focus on developments in Mozambican conservation areas, which occupy 25 percent of Mozambique’s territory.
The International Conference on Nature-Based Tourism is organised by the Global Wildlife Programme and brings together academics and experts from 25 countries to discuss biodiversity conservation in the world, with a special focus on the host country.
The meeting, which ends on Saturday, is held on a rotating basis among member countries and was previously held in India and Kenya.
