The health sector in is implementing measures to prevent the spread of cholera via citizens arriving from areas affected by Cyclone IDAI, where there are hundreds of confirmed cases of the disease.
It is feared that citizens arriving in Maputo from Beira, Dondo and elsewhere might be carrying microbes responsible for diarrhoeal diseases, especially cholera. The health sector is therefore attending at road and airport terminals to disinfect passengers arriving from these areas.
The focus on Wednesday was the inter-provincial bus terminal, where mats soaked with diluted chlorine were placed on the ground, passengers walking across them for disinfection.
Some passengers find this disconcerting, hence the awareness campaign.
Routine civic awareness activities such as handwashing lectures have been intensified.
