The central hospitals of Maputo and Beira, in Mozambique, are on Friday to host various cancer operations to be carried out with the help of visiting foreign medical professionals, the two institutions announced on Tuesday.
The visiting team, made up of 17 specialists, will undertake operations in the fields of gynaecology, breast surgery and haematology, the hospitals said in a statement, adding that training initiatives and the launch of new cooperation projects are also planned.
This is the 12th mission to Mozambique of professionals from a group of foreign institutions that has been sending missions since 2014.
The group includes nine institutions based in Brazil and the US, including hospitals and research centres, as well as businesses from the two countries.
The latest visit comes at a time when data remain scarce on the number of cancer patients in Mozambique.
Based on records at the central hospitals of Maputo, Beira and Nampula, it is estimated that the country registers an annual 3,500 new cancer cases a year.
Until now, surgery and chemotherapy have been the main forms of treatment used, with radiotherapy sessions to be available from July at the Maputo hospital.
