Mozambique: MSF mourns colleague killed in Chimbanga attack, Mocímboa da Praia district
The United States government, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), has announced that it will make 1.2 million dollars available to support Mozambique in improving its capacity for rapid response to emergency situations.
The announcement was made in Maputo on Tuesday by USAID representative David Bradt, at the close of the a project on improving rapid response capacity, at which 47 trainers in this area were trained.
The project was undertaken by the Mozambican relief agency, the National Disasters Management Institute (INGC), in partnership with USAID and the International Organisation of Migration (IOM).
Speaking at the same ceremony the regional director of the IOM, Jose Ogina, said the partnership had been formed because Mozambique is extremely vulnerable to natural disasters, including drought and floods, and needs trained staff to mitigate their impact.
Ogina recognised the efforts made by the Mozambican government to set up projects for rapid response to emergencies, but also stressed the importance of the support granted by USAID and IOM. He challenged the trainees to serve the country better, by passing on to others the knowledge they acquired during their training.
For his part, the assistant director of the INGC, Casimiro de Abreu, stressed the importance of this training, since the material taught will equip public managers at all levels with the skills needed for the coordination, management and reduction of disaster risk.
“We hope that this is the beginning of the creation of local capacities for decentralised disaster risk management in Mozambique”, he said.
Abreu told reporters that the situation of the victims of severe drought in the south and centre of the country is under control. Based on its contingency plan for natural disaster, the government has made 580 million meticais (about 10 million US dollars. at current exchange rates) available to provide assistance for the victims.
“With this money, the INGC is buying grain to feed all the people affected in the centre and south of the country”, said Abreu.
