In Nampula, over a thousand workers have already lost their jobs because of the economic crisis and armed Renamo attacks, while in Pemba, Cabo Delgado, the economic crisis has resulted in the closure of about one hundred companies providing services to hydrocarbon exploration projects.
According to their owners, other reasons for company closures are the ongoing political and military tension in the country and the stopping of oil exploration activities in the Rovuma basin. More than 2,500 workers have been laid off as a result.
The figures were put forward by Manuel André, provincial executive secretary of the Workers Union of Mozambique in Cabo Delgado, during the celebration on Thursday of the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Production Councils (Conselhos de Produção), progenitor of the Organization of Workers of Mozambique, Central Union.
