Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), Mozambique’s oldest higher education institution, will soon learn the results of an international evaluation of its courses.
On August 8 and 9 the institution was visited by a team of international external evaluators as part of the institutional evaluation initiative that the African Universities Association (AAU) is coordinating in partnership with the African Union Commission, the European Union Commission, German Academic Mobility Service, the Association of European Universities and the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
According to a statement from the UEM, the visit was aimed at assessing the quality of UEM’s education, research and extension services, including support areas such as university governance and administration.
The UEM is regularly involved in initiatives aimed at ensuring the quality of its teaching, research and extension activities, having for example in 2016 submitted some of its courses for evaluation and accreditation by CNAQ, according to the National System of Evaluation, Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
Preliminary results returned a mix of A (Excellent), B (Good) level and C (Satisfactory) evaluations. A UEM statement said the results were encouraging but also showed that challenges remained.

Also in the matter of evaluation, some UEM students were submitted to extraordinary evaluation by the Mozambican Medical Association. In the view of the UEM, it is legitimate for a professional body to assess its members, although it is important that the process and methodology used be accredited and transparent “so that all parties involved can see themselves reflected in the final results of this evaluation”, the statement said.

The Mozambican Medical Association says that of the 30 EUM candidates sitting its examination, only 15 were approved.
