Two Malawians have died after a South African bus they were travelling in to Malawi from South Africa was involved in road accident in Tete Mozambique on Tuesday police say.
According to Mwanza border, Pasqually Zulu, the Nyamende bus had 68 passengers on board.
At the moment [early this afternoon] the death toll is at 11 people. The others have sustained injuries.
The Nyamende Bus, Registration number KMZ 56ZNGP-Trailer T/NP 10GP, was involved in an accident in the afternoon of Tuesday at Songo turn off, close to Tete.
Meanwhile, according to a Nyasa Times report, sources at Malawi Police National Headquarters today were reluctant to give details on the accident.
“We have received reports that there is an accident and our men are planning to go there but details are very sketchy because our counterparts in Mozambique are not fortcoming,” said a Nyasa Times source.
He however dismissed online reports that the accident might have been ambushed in the war torn Mozambique.
Social media information indicate the accident has occurred at Songo Turn Off, near Tete, a place which has seen skirmishes between the governing Frelimo forces and opposition or rebels Renamo.
