Ten members of what are referred to as the “residual forces” of the rebel movement Renamo are to be given ranks and included in the Mozambican police force, under the understanding between the government and Renamo on the dismantling and disarming of the Renamo militia and integrating its members into the armed forces and the police, or back into civilian life.
Interior Minister Basilio Monteiro made the announcement on Friday, speaking at the annual meeting with senior staff of the bodies under his ministry (including the police, the immigration service, the fire brigade and the civil identification service).
As part of the government’s agreement with Renamo, said Monteiro, cited by the Maputo daily “Noticias” some of the ten men will be promoted to leadership positions in the General Command of the police, while others will be given positions in the traffic police, the frontier guard and the lake and river police.
Before starting these activities, Monteiro added, the ten Renamo men will undergo a training course to equip them with the necessary police skills.
“This is all for peace”, he said. “So we are asking our colleagues in the police to receive these brothers of ours, and let us work to consolidate peace”.
None of the Renamo recruits had any police experience, “but we shall embrace them with open arms and we are willing to work in harmony with them”.
Giving these Renamo men police ranks “should not be viewed with mistrust, much less with discord”, warned Monteiro.
