A teenager was found dead on Monday afternoon in a mangrove forest in Maputo city’s Costa do Sol neighbourhood. The boy’s identity and the cause of his death remain unknown.
The body of the 16-year-old appears to have been taken to the place where it was found. A significant detail is that the teenager was found face down and covered in sand, and showing no sign of injury or drowning.
“Nobody dives in that mangrove,” Paulo Simango, head of the block explains, adding that the teenager is not from the neighbourhood. “This is the first time this has happened in the area.”
Castigo Munguambe, a security guard at one of the residences near the place where the body was found, does not know anything about what happened either.
“I have heard neighbours commenting on what happened, but I didn’t work yesterday – I only came to work this morning. I went to the place to try to identify the body, but I don’t know the teenager; he’s probably not from the neighbourhood,” Munguambe said.
By the time ‘O País’ was leaving the scene, the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic) was expected to arrive to carry out forensic work and remove the body. Police have promised to make an announcement in due course.
