Tete provincial government says it will hold responsible the Chinese company behind the contamination of the Mavudzi River with sulphur, a highly toxic chemical.
The accountability arises from the Chinese-owned company failing to comply with safety measures for the transportation of hazardous goods and designed precisely to prevent environmental damage.
Hermenegildo Galimoto, the head of the Environment department at Tete Provincial Directorate of Land, Environment and Rural Development, said the company would have to repair the damage caused.
Galimoto meanwhile reiterated warnings to refrain from consuming water and other resources from the Mavudzi River area, Radio Mozambique reports.
“Do not go to the river, at least until we have definitive results for water and soil contamination,” he said.
