Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi declared on Tuesday that there are strong and clear foundations for Mozambique to cooperate advantageously with Indonesia, through the establishment of partnerships.
Speaking to journalists in Jakarta, where he took part in the first heads of state summit of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), Nyusi said Mozambique hopes to take advantage of the technological potential and the experience of Indonesia.
“We have consolidated our relations”, he said. “Our meetings with the leadership of this country will continue in order to strengthen our economic cooperation”.
Nyusi added that he had noted the great interest shown by Indonesian business people in cooperating with Mozambique, but that they raised the issue of facilitating investment procedures. He said some Indonesian businesses are interested in Mozambican cotton, and this will be analysed, bearing in mind that Mozambique wants to process its cotton internally.
Increasing cooperation between the two countries was on the table when Nyusi met with his Indonesian counterpart, Joko Widodo, on Tuesday. At the meeting, Widodo promised a line of credit for Mozambique, to strengthen the operations of Mozambican businesses, particularly in the areas of road and rail transport.
“This credit can be used this year”, said Nyusi.
As for the IORA summit, he believed it had achieved its goals, and had provided Mozambique with an opportunity to publicise its potential. The high point was the signing of the IORA Concord, an instrument which will guide cooperation between members of the association.
The leaders also signed a Plan of Action which lays down the concrete actions to be taken in implementing the Concord, and a declaration on preventing and fighting against terrorism and violent extremism.
The summit was held under the theme of “Strengthening maritime cooperation for a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indian Ocean”. The rotating presidency of IORA passed from Indonesia to South Africa.
