On the night of the third day of a State of Emergency, in the country’s capital there were several ‘barracas’ open, with customers drinking until close to 10 p.m.. This is just one among many violations of the measures imposed, ‘O País’ reports.
Evening of April 3, 2020. Third day of State of Emergency in Mozambique. But, for some people in the country’s capital, Maputo, ’emergency’ was just a name.
It is 9 p.m.… In the so-called and well-known ‘Pulmão’ [‘Lung’] of the Malhangalene neighbourhood, in the city of Maputo, there were people drinking without any concern whatsoever about the COVID-19 pandemic that is making the whole world stand to attention.
Some ‘barracas’ [bars] immediately closed as they saw ‘O País’ reporting team approach. Some people hid and there were also those who became troubled, agitated. So much so that one citizen even felt like making threats… After all, it was ‘The Lung’, in its normal breathing…
‘O País’ visited yet another neighbourhood in the city of Maputo: Matendene.
Meanwhile, in the capital of the country, these were not the only violations of the State of Emergency, on the third night since the measure came into force. In the Zimpeto wholesale market, for example, even after 9 p.m., it was business as usual, contrary to the guidelines imposing 5 p.m. as the closing time for vendors.
At the transport terminal at Praça dos Trabalhadores, for example, there were people who had to wait from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. for buses which were not only overcrowded but also scarce.
The long wait for transportation was also registered at the Zimpeto terminal. Overcrowding on buses was notable: they were barely able to close their doors.
This was the third night of a State of Emergency in the city of Maputo, there are 27 more to go…
