The Mozambican government has submitted a letter to the International Monetary Fund requesting that a technical team from the IMF be sent to the country to start discussions towards the resumption of support to the state budget.
Minister of Economy and Finance, Adriano Maleiane, made the announcement in Maputo on Friday on the sidelines of the launch of the Municipal Management System (SGA).
According to Minister Maleiane, the formal submission of the letter means that negotiations between the Mozambican government and the International Monetary Fund are proceeding well.
Regarding this year’s state budget, the minister it would reflect promises made by the government in the agriculture, education and health sectors, among others.
Decentralisation was a new element to be considered.
βIt is a budget that has to respond to a context in which revenue also needs to be improved. We all have to work to mobilise resources and, for that, society needs to understand that paying taxes is a way of contributing to this process of modernising the sectors, because we cannot make a state budget out of international cooperation alone,β Maleiane stressed.
He added that the government was developing initiatives to help grow the business community so that it too could pay the taxes needed for the executive to provide quality services.
He also said that the executive was finalising the government’s Five Year Programme (PQG), a precondition for setting up the Social Economic Plan (PES), which, in turn, would allow for the devising of the State Budget.
He added that definitive figures were not yet available, reiterating that the State Budget would only be ready for consideration by the Assembly of the Republic in April.
