Eight artisanal fishermen have been detained in Sofala after being caught using illegal fishing nets.
The provincial Directorate of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries has seized over 400 items of illegal fishing gear in the last ten months.
The figure was announced by the head of maritime surveillance in Sofala, César Mapossa, who noted that some of the fishermen currently detained had already been tried and sentenced to between one and three years in prison.
According to Mapossa, the districts of Machanga, Búzi, Muanza and Beira had registered the most cases of artisanal fishers violating standards established for the sector in Sofala.
