Sellers of essential products in Zimpeto Wholesale Market Maputo blame the lack of recent rainfall in South Africa for price rises evident over the past two to three weeks.
For example, a 10 kg sack of potatoes has gone up from 280 to 320 meticais, a box of tomatoes from 300 to 800 meticais, and eggs from 1,250 to 1,300, market administrator Ester Isabel says.
Visiting, Noticias found stalls piled high with diverse merchandise, both imported and local, constantly replenished by a stream of trucks from South Africa and Gaza and Maputo provinces.
