The head of the Russian foreign ministry Sergey Lavrov is expected in the Mozambican capital Maputo on Monday, at the start of his tour of African states, APA can report. A media statement from the Russian embassy seen by APA on Monday said Lavrov will also visit Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia where he is scheduled to meet with the leaders of these states, as well as full-format talks with their foreign ministers.
APA has also learned that US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will embark on a tour of Africa, which will see him travel to Chad, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria, from March 6 through 13, 2018.
According to a US government media advisory, “Secretary Tillerson will meet with leaders in each country, as well as the leadership of the African Union Commission based in Addis Ababa, to further our partnerships with the governments and people of Africa.”
In Maputo, Russia’s top diplomat will hold meetings with his Mozambican counterpart Jose Pacheco and President Filipe Nyusi.
“The head of the Russian foreign Ministry, Sergey Lavrov in the framework of a tour of five African countries, which will be held from 5 to 9 March, will visit Mozambique, and Moscow welcomes Maputo’s interest to attract investment and technical assistance from our country, and the interest of Russian operators in the promotion of mutually beneficial projects in Mozambique”.
The Russian Embassy statement added that an example of such cooperation is the participation of the Russian company Rosneft in the tender for hydrocarbon exploration in Mozambique in 2015.
It continued: “The discussion of topics on the bilateral agenda is expected to focus on the forthcoming opening of the intergovernmental commission on economic and scientific-technical cooperation, whose first meeting is scheduled for April this year in the Mozambican capital. Attached is great importance to this structure as the actuator mechanism for diverse Russian-Mozambican cooperation”.

The US media notice, for its part, stated that “in particular, he (Tillerson) plans to discuss ways we can work with our partners to counter terrorism, advance peace and security, promote good governance, and spur mutually beneficial trade and investment”.
During his trip, Tillerson will also meet with U.S. Embassy personnel and participate in events related to US government-supported activities.
It would be recalled that at the November 2017 meeting with African ministers hosted at the State Department, Tillerson announced his intention to travel to Africa in the first quarter of 2018.
