Sand from the Costa do Sol beach is constantly invading Maputo’s Avenue Marginal (Ring Road), putting road safety at risk.
The elimination of all vegetation in the beach, which occurred during the recent road refurbishment may be linked to this issue.
An association of factors is responsible for the presence of sand on the road, including wind erosion.
The problem is partly man-made: dunes in the area, with trees and vegetation, were destroyed during the construction of the Maputo Ring Road.
The solution, academic José Neves says, is to replace the vegetation removed.
Meanwhile, on one of the sections of the Marginal, a team toils in year-round combat against the phenomenon. With shovels and hand carts, they remove the sand and return it to its origin, a truly Sisyphean task.
