The interim leader of Renamo, Ossufo Momade, has threatened to break talks with the government if the electoral bodies do not recognise fraud in the local elections, Deutsche Welle reports.
On Twitter and Facebook, images of Renamo’s press release read by Ossufo Momade this morning have meanwhile been released.
“Given this atmosphere of violation of the principle of free choice of the people’s representatives (Universal Suffrage) and the Democratic Rule of Law, it is clear that Frelimo wants to push Renamo into a new cycle of conflict, which is not our purpose because we are committed to the peace and well-being of our people. ”
“We are very concerned about the delay in disclosing preliminary results in the municipalities where the Renamo party obtained the majority, such as Cuamba, Matola, Alto Molocue and Moatize,” further reads the communique, cited by Deutsche Welle in its daily wrap up of Local Elections news.
The full communique (in Portuguese) and press conference audio were released by Sala da Paz:
Renamo threatens to break talks with the Government – O País
The coordinator of the Renamo political commission, Ossufo Momade, says that the voting process was a fiasco and threatens to break with the negotiations he is having with the Government due to the alleged falsification of the results of the October 10 vote in some municipalties.
In the communication today, through an audio, Ossufo Momade pointed out the irregularities to which the party refers. “In the district of Marromeu, with 39 tables, when Frelimo realised that Renamo was taking advantage in 29 tables …, the Frelimo party, STAE’s chief of operations, accompanied by the PRM, were to remove the voting material corresponding to 10 voting tables whose ‘editais’ had not been delivered to the delegates of candidacy, with the aim of falsifying the results in favour of the Frelimo party. ”
Momade also pointed to situations where chairmen handed out two or more ballot papers to voters identified as members of the Frelimo party. The Renamo party says that this situation has been observed in all municipalities, but with a greater incidence in the municipality of Massinga, Inhambane, Dondo in Sofala, Maganja da Costa in Zambézia, Ilha de Moçambique, Ribáuè and Angoche in Nampula. It adds that these cases were covered up by the police, which arrested all those who tried to denounce such acts
In the municipality of Alto Molocué, Renamo speaks of the robberies of minutes and partial results’ editais, in a coordinated action with the Police.
Faced with these facts, Renamo says that Frelimo wants to push its party into a new cycle of conflict, which is not its purpose.
“We do not want war, but we also do not accept or accept any attempt to challenge the popular vote,” said Momade, going further. “If this popular vote is not respected, Renamo will break the negotiations and the consequences shall be the sole responsibility of the President of the Republic and of the Frelimo party. ”
