The interim coordinator of Renamo, Mozambique’s main opposition party, today demanded that a commission of inquiry into the October 10 elections in five municipalities is set, with UN involvement. Momade characterised the process as a “complete farce”.
“We, Renamo, demand an independent commission of inquiry that will bring the electoral truth,” said Ossufo Momade, speaking by phone from Gorongosa, central Mozambique, to journalists in the headquarters of the Mozambican National Resistance ) in Maputo.
The independent commission of inquiry will examine the electoral process in five municipalities: Monapo, Alto Molocué, Marromeu, Moatize and Matola, said the interim coordinator of the Political Commission of the main opposition party.
“To do this, we wish to count on the good offices of the United Nations,” added Ossufo Momade, cited by Lusa. Sala da Paz and journalist Alexandre Nhampossa reported that Momade called for “the collaboration of the United Nations, civil society, religious denominations and the international community through the contact group of the Government-Renamo negotiations”.
Para tal, segundo Ossufo, a Renamo quer contar com a colaboração das Nações Unidas, sociedade civil, confissões religiosas e com a comunidade internacional através do grupo de contacto das negocies entre o partido e o Governo.

Renamo’s interim coordinator, who replaced the late party president Afonso Dhlakama in May, called the local elections a fraud, accusing members of the ruling Mozambican Liberation Front (Frelimo) in the National Electoral Commission (CNE) to have resorted to voting to clear the results.
“It is strange that the National Electoral Commission has, in a lightheaded manner, resorted to the dictatorship of vote to clear the results,” he said.
The CNE should have resorted to minutes and to result sheets [editais] to establish the election results, said Ossufo Momade.
Momade accused the electoral body of turning local elections into a “complete farce” for allegedly manipulating and falsifying the results.
“I regret the deplorable situation our country arrives to, whenever an electoral process ends,” he said.
Ossufo Momade called on the head of State, Filipe Nyusi, who is also president of Frelimo, to resolve the electoral dispute, stressing that the litigation surrounding the process may lead to a setback in the peace negotiations.
“”I want, here and now, to invite the head of state to urgently put an end to the problem affecting our country, otherwise we will fall back on the current negotiations, which are taking place in an atmosphere of truce and understanding,” he said.
