Difficulties in access to land, the means of production and markets are some of the barriers that still prevent the full participation of women in the development of the country.
This statement was made on Sunday by Isaura Nyusi, the wife of the president, who was speaking on the occasion of the 15th October International Day of Rural Women, the central ceremonies of which took place at the Cumbana Administrative Post, Jangamo district, Inhambane province under the motto “Empowerment of Rural Women and Girls Ensures Gender Equality and Sustainable Development”.
In her address, the First Lady spoke of the difficulties that women and girls in rural areas still face in accessing credit, in addition to the acts of domestic violence practised against them.
“This challenging social reality proves that, just as before, the bravery of Mozambican women remains essential in the struggle for socio-economic stability in the country,” the First Lady said. She went on to recommend greater gender equality in agricultural decision-making, with a view to making agriculture an area at the service of women as well as the population generally.
Isaura Nyusi also welcomed government efforts to promote actions to ensure that development processes contribute to gender equality and the empowerment of women.
“In this context, women have been actively involved in all sectors. And its role in the social, economic, cultural and political spheres, at various levels, and in the stability of families is increasingly visible,” the First Lady noted, adding that progress has been made particularly in access to education, healthcare, water, sanitation and productive means, especially in rural areas.
Isaura Nyusi also spoke about International White Cane Safety Day, also celebrated on Sunday, under the motto “With the White Cane, Illuminating the Road Towards Effective Inclusion”.
“This motto seeks to raise the awareness of families, government and community authorities of the need for respect for the visually impaired, satisfied their concerns for an increasingly accessible and inclusive world as a way to promote equal opportunities,” she said.
Isaura Nyusi also advocated coordinated and multidisciplinary action by all sectors in order to respond effectively to the challenges of rural development.
She emphasised the role of partners, especially the African Development Bank, in developing actions for the economic empowerment of women and girls.
For the wife of the president, access to and control over productive resources and the enjoyment of women’s human rights will never be achieved as long as social practices that place women in subordinate and submissive position remain.
That is why Isuara Nyusi wants to intensify actions aimed at removing hindrances to the normal development of women and girls, including domestic violence, trafficking in persons and premature marriages and early pregnancies, so that girls can see their dreams come true.
