Mozambique Elections: Protests in Alto Molocué, police fires tear gas - report
A surprise attack on a Defense and Security Forces column in Mocímboa da Praia on Sunday morning resulted in the death of the National Director of Recognition of the Rapid Intervention Unit, identified only by the name Lorino.
With just a few days to go by the deadline set by the Commander-in-Chief of Police, clashes in the forests of the Mocímboa da Praia district are intensifying. Last Sunday morning, a column of the Defense and Security Forces supplying the personnel stationed in Mitumbate was attacked when they stopped to unblock the road.
According to close sources, the attack resulted in the death of a senior Rapid Intervention Unit officer, who was hit by shots in his vehicle and thereafter targeted by the assailants.
Local residents say that the exchange of shots at the ambush site lasted at least an hour.
O País has determined that at least five officers were seriously injured during the attack, and transferred to Pemba Provincial Hospital. No-one in the municipal village was willing to comment publicly, neither the Defense and Security Forces nor the management of the local hospital.Source: O País
