Ilha Blue Island Safaris are dedicated to introducing Responsible Whale Watch practices into Northern Mozambique and this season the company is offering large discounts to school groups, educators and influencers to enlist their enthusiastic support to make it happen.
Every year Humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the warmer Mozambique waters where they breed and give birth. It’s a spectacular event with the whales jumping, tail slapping and waving their enormous pectoral fins as part of their famous courtship display, and it’s the kind of event that people travel from all over the world to experience. Mozambique is very lucky – the growing awareness of the East African whale migration is already boosting tourism numbers, and if done responsibly, this growth will continue.
Humpback whales were almost wiped out by industrial whaling last century, however since hunting was banned in the 1960’s, their numbers have steadily increased. This is a great conservation success story and we need to build on it.
So what is responsible whale watching? Pete Allsop from Ilha Blue a Partner in the World Cetacean Alliance explains. “It’s part of a global trend. Mostly it’s about respecting the whales and giving them the space they need. After all this is a very special time for them; mating, giving birth and nursing their calves through the first days and weeks of life. The last thing the whales need is careless people invading their space and interrupting what they are doing”.
But does that mean we have to stay away all together? “Absolutely not” explains Pete. “There is no reason why tourists can’t continue to visit and be inspired by this spectacular event, just so long as it is done responsibly by following the internationally accepted protocols:
Mozambique is set to become a significant whale watch destination if the industry embraces the global trend for responsible whale watching practices.
This season (July to October 2018) Ilha Blue are offering a minimum 40% discount to Mozambican educational groups, community groups, Mozambique based educators (including Peace Corp), tourism operators and social media influencers. To qualify contact [email protected]
