Twelve prisoners escaped from the Nicoadala District Prison in Zambezia. The subsequent police chase recaptured seven inmates, leaving five still at large.
The twelve inmates who escaped were among the 24 men being held in the same cell block awaiting the next steps in their proceedings.
Our reporter gained access to two of the seven recaptured, one of whom, a man who has been in jail for two months for bribing a traffic police officer, was unable to detail exactly how the break-out was orchestrated, but said that the head of the cell block planned it, and that he merely took advantage of the confusion.
The other man was arrested three months ago for buying a stolen briefcase. He also denies having taken part in planning the escape, and says he now regrets following the others.
Efforts continue to secure the recapture of the remaining fugitives.
This is the second recent prisoner break-out involving Zambézia District Court detainees. Less than three weeks ago, Miramar notes, six inmates escaped from the Mocuba District Prison in dubious circumstances, and, according to confidential information in Miramar’s possession, investigations are underway to ascertain any possible involvement of penitentiary personnel in the escape.
