SAMIM leaving Mozambique for lack of funds
President Filipe Nyusi on Wednesday met in Maputo with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, who is in Mozambique on a three-day visit.
During the meeting, it was agreed that a ministerial joint commission would be set up as soon as possible to consider matters of joint interest.
According to Mozambique’s Foreign Minister, Oldemiro Baloi, ten themes have been discussed including political and diplomatic issues, agriculture, justice, science and technology, tourism, transport and communications, defence, industry and trade, economics and finance.
Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Taye Atsekselaise, added that the two states are looking to strengthen relations as the current situation offers many opportunities. However, he acknowledged that there are various challenges, particularly in the sphere of peace and security on a regional and continental level.
Baloi used the occasion to congratulate Ethiopia on its election to the United Nations Security Council. In the election, which was held at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, Ethiopia received 185 out of 190 votes. It will take up the two-year post at the beginning of 2017.
Baloi added that Ethiopia is known to be an active actor in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, and in peacekeeping operations.
Atsekselaise responded that his country is going to be an advocate for Africa and highlight the suffering that the continent is experiencing.
Atsekselaise stressed, “there are many essential issues that we are going to address on behalf of the continent”. This includes reform of the United Nations, which he believes can be achieved through a calm and steady approach. He stated that “this will ensure that the UN will be an organ representative of the interests of all in the 21st century”.
On Thursday, the Prime Minister will lay a wreath at Maputo’s Monument to the Mozambican Heroes, take a tour of the Mozal aluminium smelter, and visit the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic.
