Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi arrived in Cape Verde on Monday to attend the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) summit of heads of state and government.
The opening ceremony takes place today Tuesday in Santa Maria, on Sal Island, under the theme “Culture, people, and oceans”. It will mark the handover of the CPLP presidency from Brazil to Cape Verde.
Among the topics that could be discussed are proposals to promote the free movement of people between the member countries, economic and business cooperation, and the need for Equatorial Guinea to abolish the death penalty.
Equatorial Guinea joined the organisation in 2014 based on a commitment to abolish the death penalty. However, until now the law has not been changed, although a moratorium on executions is in place.
On the margins of the summit, various meetings will be held covering topics such as food security and nutrition.
CPLP is composed of nine members: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor-Leste (East Timor).
During the visit, President Nyusi will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Jose Pacheco; Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Agostinho Mondlane; Mozambique’s Ambassador to Portugal, Joaquim Bule; and members of the presidential staff.
Following the summit, President Nyusi will travel to Rwanda for a state visit which will take place from 19 to 21 July.
