Portugal’s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said on Tuesday that China and Portugal can work together towards promoting international law through multilateralism and human rights.
Rebelo de Sousa was speaking at the presidential palace in Lisbon following a meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping, who began his two-day official visit to Portugal on Tuesday.
Portugal’s president pointed out that while both countries were “far away in geographic terms” and had “very different allies,” it didn’t stop them from working together “towards improving the role of international law and of international organisations starting with the United Nations.”
He said both countries could “defend multilateralism, human rights, the pacific resolution of conflicts” and “free commerce, bridges of understanding between states and people” and to be aware of climate change.
On Wednesday, the Chinese president and his delegation will be welcomed to the Portuguese parliament by the speaker, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues with military honours.
Later he will meet the prime minister, António Costa, for bilateral talks before leaving in the mid-afternoon.
