The government is in negotiations with the Maputo Port Development Society (MPDC), the current concessionaire, to establish terms and conditions aimed at extending the concession contract for a period of 25 years.
In this context, the concessionaire must, in the near future, make additional investments valued at around US$2 billion, with a view to increasing cargo handling capacity.
To this end, the executive has just granted powers to the Minister of Transport and Communications to negotiate with the MPDC the terms and conditions of the addendum to the concession contract.
The information was provided on Tuesday, in Maputo, by the spokesperson for the Council of Ministers, Filimão Suaze, at the end of the 39th Ordinary Session of the body, which debated and assessed several proposals on the activities of the executive.
With a total of 1,058 metres of berthing area made up of Piers 6, 7, 8 and 9, MPDC has, in recent times, been investing in the acquisition of new equipment, as well as in work to expand the port area.
