The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Pacheco, who also chairs the Inter-ministerial Commission for Major National and International Events (CIGENI), said yesterday in Maputo that the Pope’s physical security during the three days of his stay in Mozambique was being meticulously overseen, in collaboration with a team from the Vatican.
Pacheco advanced this information at a press conference called to announce the programme of His Holiness Pope Francis’ visit to Mozambique, at which the minister revealed that the Pope would hold several meetings in Maputo.
Pacheco confirmed that the Pope will arrive on September 4, and will pay a courtesy visit to the President of the Republic, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, at the Ponta Vermelha Palace on the following day, as well as meeting other authority and civil society representatives and members of the diplomatic corps.
On September 5, the Pope has an interfaith meeting with young people in Maxaquene gymnastics pavilion, and another with the bishops, priests, consecrated seminarians and catechists at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The day ends with a private visit to “Casa Mateus 25”.
The official said that on the last day the Pope will pay a visit to the Infulene Psychiatric Hospital and, finally, celebrate Mass at the Zimpeto National Stadium.
Spokesman for the event the Auxiliary Bishop of Maputo, D. Antonio Juliasse F. Sandramo, announced that, from the 15th of this month, the Catholic Church would distribute passwords for access to the Mass at the Zimpeto National Stadium, to guarantee order at the event.
Minister Pacheco warned that only protocol vehicles would be allowed to enter the stadium grounds, and that the rest would park about a kilometre away, so as to avoid the usual congestion.
