Large numbers of people came to Maputo International Airport yesterday to welcome the world skipping champions back to the country after their winning the third world acrobatic gymnastics jumping rope title.
Songs and dances were organised by the Mozambican Gymnastics Federation in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to provide a festive atmosphere for the winners’ reception.
Gymnast Elvis Tembe was a visibly happy man, not only on account of the title, but also because of the affection of the crowd.
“I am very happy for everything my compatriots have done for us. It was a great surprise, because I did not expect to be received this way. Thank you very much for the affection and love that you showed,” he said.
Regarding the title, Tembe said that “this time, we had the best team ever. We prepared in advance, taking into account the opponents that we were going to meet. We were very united, as you can imagine. A collective work needs a lot of practice and unity, above all else”.
He added that “as soon as we took the stage, the responsibility began to weigh on our shoulders, because we knew that our compatriots had not forsaken us; they had transmitted their warmth via social networks. So it was a good experience to be part of the squad and emerge successful.”
“We want to publicise the modality, so that in the next world championships wide everything is ready. To that end, we plan to take on beginners and work without rest to win more titles for the country,” Tembe concluded.
The vice minister of Youth and Sports, Ana Flávia Azinheira, attended the reception ceremony and congratulated the world champions on their title win.
“Congratulations on the title won in Florida, USA. The Ministry of Youth and Sports knows this is not for the first time that Mozambican gymnasts have brought home bring titles in this modality. Next time, we would like to see the athletes from other modalities do the same. We know it is not easy, but as you know, everything depends on solidarity, willpower and dedication,” the vice minister said.
“We would like to see this modality practiced nationally in order to discover new talents, new stars that are hidden by lack of popularity of this discipline. I call on the president of the federation to redouble his efforts in the expansion of this modality. As everyone knows, gymnastics is part of the list of sports practiced in the School Sports Games, where the talent of Elvis Tembe, one of the members of the team that made history in Florida, was discovered,” Azinheira said.
On the occasion, Mussa Tembe, the 1968 world gymnastics champion and president of the Mozambican Gymnastics Federation, said that there is room for massification of the sport in order to continue to bring victories and titles to the country. In addition, Tembe congratulated the athletes of Jump to the String by the conquest “if we take into account the conditions with which they travelled to the USA”.
This is the third consecutive time that Mozambique has won the world championship, after the achievements of 2015 in France and 2016 in Portugal.
