Within two years, Beira’s first general hospital, a modern health unit valued at over € 23 million, will be ready. Speaking at the laying of the first stone, the President of the Republic said that Mozambique’s three main cities would then have benchmark health facilities.
Beira General Hospital will have a total area of over 15,000 built square metres, on a plot of over six hectares.
The modern two-floor structure will have a space reserved for external consultations with 22 rooms, a diagnostic area with services such as x-ray, mammography, ultrasound and CT, plus an operating suite with three theatres.
The President of the Republic on Saturday directed the laying of the first stone and listened to a brief explanation of what was planned.
Construction and equipment for the 290-bed hospital will cost €23 million, of which €11 million has been donated by the Netherlands, with €12 million coming from a concessionary loan from the French Development Agency.
Its location on National Road Number Six (EN6) will relieve pressure on Beira central hospital, already the reference health centre for central Mozambique.
Speaking at the ceremony, the head of state said that Beira General Hospital was more than a project: it was the realisation of a dream.
Construction is in the hands of a Chinese contractor, and is expected to take about two years.
