Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has called for economic inclusion in the exploitation of the country’s natural resources as one of the ways of distributing the national wealth.
Speaking on Thursday, at the opening of the Norway-Mozambique Energy Business & Investment Forum in Oslo, Nyusi said “We refuse to be known just as a country that has a lot of resources. We want to be known as a country that grows and develops in an endogenous and sustainable way, making full use of its natural resources”.
“We want to be a country that possesses wealth, but above all a country that makes the best use of these resources”, he told the forum, attended by Mozambican and Norwegian business people, and members of the governments of both countries.
One of the challenges facing Mozambique, Nyusi said, is the need to transform natural resources into wealth and income for all. “We want to transform our natural resources and the potential that emanates from them into wealth for the nation, wealth expressed in improving the social and economic conditions of Mozambicans”, he declared.
He invited Norwegian businesses to invest in exploiting Mozambican natural resources in partnership with local companies, on the basis of mutual advantage.
“Things are happening in Mozambique”, he stressed. “The Mozambican market is safe. Today Mozambique is a safe country for investment in Africa”.

The Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry, Torbjorn Isaksen, stressed the good relations of cooperation between the two countries which go back more than 40 years. “The best is yet to come”, he said, stressing that Norway is ready to share business opportunities for mutual benefit.
Isaksen said that Norwegian companies can contribute with knowledge and technology, particularly in the area of energy and hydrocarbons. It was important, he added, that the revenue from natural resources should benefit the people.
37 Mozambican businessmen, affiliated to the Confederation of Mozambican Business Associations (CTA) took part in the Forum and expressed optimism about the possibility of establishing business partnerships with Norwegian counterparts.
CTA chairperson, Agostinho Vuma, regarded the contacts made with Norwegian companies as “productive”, and believed that a window of opportunities had been opened for the promotion and export of Mozambican products such as cashew nuts and sea food.
