Mozambican authorities will introduce 15 improved sweet potato varieties to the fields of Mozambique’s most populous province, Nampula, in the north of the country, to combat high levels of malnutrition, the provincial agriculture directorate has announced.
The measure is part of a seven-year project started in 2014 in partnership with the non-governmental organisation Feed The Future and the United States Agency for International Development. It mainly benefits Mozambican families practicing subsistence agriculture.
As many as 102,000 families are expected to have access to the new varieties, along with training to make cultivation more efficient, according to information divulged to Lusa yesterday.
The new varieties are rich in vitamins A and C and in potassium, which will help boost the immune system.
The provincial Agriculture and Food Security Directorate in Nampula says half the population of the province suffers from chronic malnutrition, 43 percent of them children under the age of five.
Preliminary data from the 2017 census indicate that Nampula has a population estimated at 6.1 million.
