A new ferry has entered service on the Maputo-KaTembe crossing, contributing to more flexible passenger and cargo transportation. The “Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem” (Our Lady of the Safe Journey) was launched on Saturday and has the capacity to carry about 80 passengers.
She will be the fastest vessel on the crossing, linking the two docks in five to seven minutes, against the 15 or so of the other public and private vessels.
Owner Freddy Miranda says that “Our Lady of Boa Viagem” was built in KaTembe and will operates from 5:00am to 8:00pm, saving hundreds of workers and students time and allowing those leaving downtown Maputo later in the day to return safely to KaTembe.
Speaking yesterday to Noticias, Miranda said that he had worked in fishing, construction and boat repair for 27 years, and while he considered it risky to get into the ferry business only a few months before the completion of the Maputo-KaTembe bridge, he finally decided to take the plunge because of increased demand and what he saw as the weak response of the four boats currently plying the crossing.
