A Mozambican analyst questions Rogério Warowaro as choice for the MDM head-of-list in the October elections in Quelimane. He predicts that “it will not be easy” to face down the current mayor Manuel de Araújo, who left the MDM to stand as Renamo candidate.

Rogério Warowaro, the new candidate for the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) in Quelimane, has a great challenge ahead of him and it will be very difficult to beat Manuel de Araújo at the polls, according to Mozambican political analyst Ricardo Raboco.
“As a political delegate for the city of Quelimane, Rogério Warowaro has led the MDM campaign in the presidential elections, and often his platform went far beyond what the electorate was likely to want. There lies Warowaro’s biggest challenge as a candidate, especially facing Manuel de Araújo,” Raboco said in an interview with DW Africa.
Raboco says is not in a position to compete on an equal footing with Manuel de Araújo, “who’s manner is much better suited to the masses” and can “express himself fluently in the local language chuabo”, besides being ” very well versed in popular culture”.
Manuel de Araújo was elected mayor of Quelimane in 2013 on the MDM ticket, but recently announced his departure from the party and will head the Renamo list in the October elections.
Youth to “tchunar Quelimane”
Despite the hard task ahead, the MDM’s new candidate Rogério Warowaro is aiming for victory in the municipal elections.
“The feeling is one of a thrill, meaning that the MDM is betting on youth to bring it victory in Quelimane,” Warowaro says. “The MDM will have a mayor who resides in Quelimane, and is accessible to solve citizens’ problems.”
Rogério Warowaro, 38, was elected on Sunday (29.07) with 190 votes against 129 of the opponent, Deputy Izequiel Aramane, a member of the Provincial Directorate of Economics and Finance.
“I am young, and as we young people say in our own language when we want to do something beautiful, I am going to ‘tchunar’ it. Then the MDM and the youth are going to ‘tchunar’ Quelimane,” he says.
MDM Assembly of the Republic deputy Luís Boa Vida, who was present at the ceremony to indicate the head-of-list, gave a warning: “The MDM needs unity, and a figure to unite Quelimane’s citizens for five years.”
Renamo and MDM, the two main Mozambican opposition parties, have already indicated their heads of list for the six municipalities in Zambézia province. The names of candidates for Liberation Front of Mozambique (Frelimo) are now awaited.
