Mozambique’s Gaza region earned about US$6.3 million from tourism activities during the first nine months of 2018, provincial director for culture and tourism Emily Mapswangane revealed on Wednesday. According to the official, the province received more than 96,000 tourists between January and September.
She said the earnings represent 60 percent of the provincial target for the year, and a growth of just over 20 percent compared to the corresponding period in 2017.
“The tourism districts of Bilene, Mandlakazi and Chókwè were major contributors as they collected half of the amount during this period,” Mapswangane told APA.
Mozambique is one of the fastest growing African economies and aims to draw more tourists to the unspoilt beaches and diving spots along its Indian Ocean coast.
The country is endowed with spectacular beaches and islands along its 2,600-kilometre Indian Ocean coastline.
Mapswanganhe said the prevailing political stability after a ravaging 16-year civil war which ended in 1992 provided a conducive environment for investment in tourism.
