One of the worst stretches of the EN1 main road that runs up and down Mozambique is going to undergo emergency roadworks, the government said on Thursday.
The country’s public works minister, João Machatine, told the state newspaper ‘Notícias’ after watching the start of the works on Wednesday, that it was thanks to having peace in the country that the works could proceed.
The works are going to be carried out in Sofala province in the centre of the country along 300 kilometres of two-way road that was damaged in the military confrontations in the region up until the cease-fire that has been in force since late 2016.
The tarmac had disappeared in many parts and businesses have complained about the huge potholes in the road.
The government eventually wants to repair the entire road.
