On Jan. 26, a meeting between a Turkish delegation and the Confederation of Business Associations of Mozambique (CTA) took place in Maputo.
Headed by Ankara Vice Mayor, the Turkish delegation was composed of the Turkish Ambassador in Maputo, Aylin Tashan, and representatives of technical and commercial Turkish companies. The Mozambican delegation was represented by the vice-president of the CTA, Agostinho Vuma, accompanied by his assistants Avelino Zimila and Lucas Judas.
This meeting took place in the context of the twinning agreement that was signed last year between the cities of Maputo and Ankara under which the two large cities will cooperate in urbanization, housing and transportation.
The purpose of the delegation’s visit in Maputo was to explore the partnership opportunities with the Mozambican private sector, particularly in the construction sector, in the context of the rehabilitation plan for the city of Maputo.
Aylin Tashan welcomed the progress made in the urbanization of Maputo but also underlined the challenges that still exist to develop all parts of the city. She recalled that her country shared the same challenges and had succeeded in facing them.
Vuma said: “Turkey is one of the biggest countries in the world regarding the construction sector. Partnerships between the Turkish and Mozambican companies would constitute a win-win situation. The country needs the involvement of your companies and their direct investments.”
Vuma also stressed the government’s intention to create 36,000 units of social housing as a good investment opportunity.
The business and technical delegation asked the CTA many questions in particular on the qualifications of the Mozambican workforce, the costs of labour and construction, the tax systems and the ability to obtain machinery in the country.
The Vice-Mayor of Ankara recalled the city’s willingness to invest not only in the construction area but also in other sectors where Mozambique has identified needs.
This meeting took place the day after a meeting with president of the Maputo Municipal Council, David Simango, and its technical team.
