Mozambique and Vietnam will cooperate in the transfer and extradition of prisoners under an agreement signed by the two governments in Maputo.
“We have five Vietnamese citizens imprisoned here and, on the basis of this agreement, they will be able to serve the sentence closer to their relatives in their home country,” Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs Joaquim Veríssimo is quoted as saying today by the Mozambican Information Agency.
The agreements on extradition and the transfer of jailed persons were signed by the Mozambican Minister of Justice and the Minister of Public Security of Vietnam To Lam in Maputo on Monday.
Verissimo is unaware of the exact number of Mozambicans held in Vietnam, but says the country has been assisting people “in the diaspora in conflict with the law”.
“We probably have three or four Mozambicans in conflict with the law in Vietnamese territory,” the official said.
The agreements also aim to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the area of criminal investigation and the fight against organised crime and terrorism.
The instrument, which is awaiting ratification, provides that neither country can be used as a refuge for persons who are fugitives or are sought by the courts of either country for acts contrary to the law, and are the result of negotiations which began in 2014.Source: Lusa
