In Mozambique some 400,000 cattle in seven provinces are to be vaccinated, as part of measures to stem an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the country, the authorities announced on Wednesday.
“The immunisation of these cattle will be carried out using 250,000 doses of vaccine,” the National Veterinary Directorate (DINAV) was quoted by the newspaper Notícias as saying.
The provinces in question are Inhambane, Gaza, Manica, Sofala, Tete, Zambezia and Nampula.
An emergency committee set up in the wake of the outbreak, has determined the need to establish protective cordons to block the spread of the disease.
DINAV last month extended the obligatory inspection of livestock to several more provinces – the city of Maputo, Inhambane, Zambezia, Sofala, Cabo Delgado and Niassa – due to the risk of foot and mouth spreading further.
The disease, which is also known as aphthous fever, is an extremely contagious viral disease that affects practically all cloven-footed animals, including cattle, sheep, goats and pigs as well as wild species such as antelope. It causes sores in the muzzle, mouth, feet, teats and udders, among other parts of the body.
