The newly built Jangamo District Hospital and the Vilankulo Transit Centre have been identified by authorities in Inhambane as centres for housing and treating people infected by Covid-19.
The Jangamo District Hospital, which will serve the central and southern areas of the province, has a capacity of 60 beds. So far, only 29 of these have been earmarked to respond to the pandemic.
The health unit has all the necessary equipment to assist patients with the disease, from protective materials to breathing aids.
The new Jangamo District Hospital has not even opened yet, but is the ideal place to isolate Covid-19 patients, as they will not affect the normal functioning of other hospitals or put other patients at risk.
The Vilankulo Transit Centre serves the districts of Mabote, Inhassoro, Govuro and Vilankulo, in the north of Inhambane. It has 20 beds and all the support equipment necessary.
In the event of a Covid-19 outbreak in Inhambane, there are already personnel from several health specialties with technical capacity to deal with the pandemic. Personnel training ended a week ago, some in the places identified, and with more in readiness as soon as required.
The province however still lacks any means of diagnosing the virus that has been ravaging the world for months. At the moment, Inhambane has about 20 sample collection kits, but these must be sent for analysis to the National Health Institute (INS), in Marracuene, Maputo province.
