Two individuals, a Mozambican and a Congolese, have been arrested by agents from Nampula city’s First Police Station, accused of drugging and raping minors between 13 and 16 years of age.
The victims of the six-day ordeal reported that they were approached on the sidewalk by the suspects who offered them a ride in the vehicle they were driving.
Arriving at their presumed destination, the individuals did not stop as requested but continued on to a place where they were keeping others in captivity, forcing them to consume alcoholic beverages and other psychoactive substances and then raping them under threat of death.
The suspects are accused of false imprisonment, rape and sexual abuse.
A police source said that the detention of the individuals came about as the result of a complaint lodged by the father of one of the minors.
Meanwhile, a 22-year-old woman whose identity has not been revealed is being held at the same police station on suspicion of having abandoned a new-born baby in a latrine in the Natikiri neighbourhood.
The young mother’s detention occurred after the case was reported to the authorities by her family, who rushed to the scene and rescued the still-alive infant.
The young woman claims that she was abandoned by her husband and unable to take care of the child, which is meanwhile receiving medical care at Nampula Central Hospital.
The PRM urges all mothers unable to care for their new-borns to refrain from a similar course of action.
