In January and February of this year, the Mozambican provincial directorates of Migration rejected 66 requests for Identification and Residency Documents for Foreigners (DIREs).
The biggest problem was the presentation of false supporting documents, particularly work permits.
Speaking on Friday in Maputo, National Migration Service (SENAMI) spokesman Celestino Matsinhe told a press conference that 52 cases were registered in Maputo (city), 14 in Zambézia and one in Nampula.
On discovering these irregularities, the proper records were drawn up and submitted to the competent bodies for criminal proceedings, Matsinhe said, complaining that there had been an increase in the falsification of this type of document recently.
“When there is suspicion of the originality of the document, it is submitted to the labour authorities for the purpose of confirming its authenticity. This process takes time, which affects the timing of its issuance,” he said.
“In February, SENAMI received 1,806 DIRE applications from provincial Migration directorates, 5% down on the January figure of 1,898 requests,” Matsinhe indicated.
Matsinhe appealed to national and foreign citizens wishing to request travel or residence documents to submit their requests only to SENAMI personnel in uniform at Immigration Services counters.
