Eighteen people have committed suicide by hanging in the administrative post of Save, Machaze district, Manica province, in the last 13 months.
This information was shared in Save by the governor of Manica, Francisca Tomás, at a meeting with civil servants, predominantly teachers, in the village of Chidoco yesterday.
The meeting was part of a working visit the governor made to Machaze district, which ends today. Francisca Tomás will then head to the neighbouring district of Mossurize.
The figures show that 12 persons took their own lives last year, and six in January and February this year. Marital conflicts and other social problems predominate among the causes.
Tomás asked those at the meeting to urge the population against suicide. “[Committing suicide] does not solve problems, it aggravates them. It leaves widows, orphaned children and breaks up families.”
The governor called on teachers and other civil service staff in the meeting to take an active role in combating the scourge, advising parties involved in conflict to resort to judicial or community leaders, rather than taking their own lives.
Most of the suicides are committed by men, who hang themselves, with jealousy reportedly the most common cause.
The governor of Manica’s visit proceeds to the southern districts of the province today, where she will thank the electorate for having placed its trust in Frelimo and its candidate, Filipe Nyusi, in the presidential and provincial assemblies held on October 15 last year.
