The Rwandan military contingent in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado is now being deployed in the district of Macomia, reports Friday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”.
According to the paper’s sources, for the last three weeks the Rwandans have been supporting the South African troops of SAMIM (SADC Military Mission in Mozambique) in the fight against islamist terrorism.
As of Wednesday Rwandan forces were operating in Macomia town and in Chai administrative post, one of the areas worst hit by terrorist raids. Other sources told ”Mediadfax” that Rwandan forces have also deployed to coastal Macomia.
A curfew has now been imposed in Macomia town and in Chai. The number of terrorist incidents in Macomia has declined sharply in recent days, and this is attributed to the Rwandan presence.
The Rwandan forces used to be stationed only in Mocimboa da Praia and Palma districts. Last year, together with the Mozambican defence and security forces, they displaced the terrorists from their strongholds in these two districts. In August, a joint Mozambican/Rwandan force retook Mocimboa da Praia town, which had been in jihadist hands for about a year.
The Macomia district government fled to the provincial capital, Pemba, after a major terrorist raid in May 2020. But now government officials are beginning to return to Macomia, and offices are re-opening.
Teachers are returning to the district and now at least ten primary schools and one secondary school are operating.
Members of the public administration who were displaced from their homes and jobs in Macomia have been advised that they will soon be returning to the district definitively, and that the government will provide transport to take them back to Macomia.
