Care in the nursery of the Hospital Central da Beira (HCB) has improved with the help of a newly-reformed corps of volunteer nurses.
Interim nursery head Nisia da Virginia told our reporter that, with the group’s help, they now worked three shifts with three nurses instead of two shifts with two, explaining that the bulk of the patients in the ward are premature babies born weighing one kilogram or less.
“We’ve had a lot of babies like this, this year. We’ve had cases of infections that leave the newborns weak and feverish, without the desire to suckle,” she said.
Virginia was grateful for the help and welcomed the fact that the volunteers had taken on the job of bathing and feeding the babies.
She revealed that the HCB nursery received on average between three to five newborns a day. “But there are times when it goes way above that number, and up to 10 come in each shift,” she said.
