The border post of Ressano Garcia, the busiest in Mozambique and connecting the country to South Africa, will be open 24 hours a day until 11 January 11, according to the country’s National Migration Service (Senami).
As in previous years, the measure, which began on Thursday, responds to increased traffic during the Christmas and New Year holidays, Senami spokesman Celestino Matsinhe was quoted as saying.
The operation will be coordinated by a joint command that includes the authorities that operate at the border: Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Customs Directorate, Border Police and Senami.
“For this festive season, entries into the country are expected to reach a peak between 22 and 28 December,” the spokesman said.
For this festive season, Senami predicts that 803,000 travellers will cross Mozambican borders, compared with 730,000 people who crossed in the same period last year.
